What the Navy Body Fat Calculator helps you understand

The Navy Body Fat Calculator applies the same Hodgdon-Beckett circumference formula used across the DoD but presents results in the context of Navy-specific body composition standards. The Navy's body fat limits differ from the Army: males are allowed a maximum of 23% body fat for ages 17-39 and 25% for ages 40+, while females are allowed 34% for ages 17-39 and 36% for ages 40+. The Navy Physical Readiness Program (PRP) administered under OPNAVINST 6110.1J governs the assessment process. Navy personnel who fail the body fat assessment are placed in the Body Composition Assessment (BCA) failure status and must participate in the Fitness Enhancement Program (FEP). Measurement procedures closely follow the DoD standard, with neck and waist measurements for males and neck, waist, and hip for females.

Each service has its own current rules, measurement sites, and standards.

What are Navy body fat limits?+

Navy body fat limits are 23% for males under 40, 25% for males 40+, 34% for females under 40, and 36% for females 40+. These are defined in OPNAVINST 6110.1J.

How does the Navy BCA process work?+

Sailors who exceed the screening weight are taped using the DoD method. Those who exceed the body fat limit fail the BCA and enter the Fitness Enhancement Program. Multiple failures can result in administrative separation.

Are Navy measurement sites the same as the Army?+

Yes, the Navy uses the same anatomical landmarks: neck at the narrowest point, waist at the navel for males, and waist at the narrowest point plus hips at the widest point for females.

How often does the Navy conduct body composition assessments?+

The Navy conducts Physical Readiness Tests (including BCA) twice per year — typically in the spring and fall cycles. Additional assessments may be required for sailors in the Fitness Enhancement Program.
