What the Army Deadlift Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

The Army Deadlift Calculator scores the 3 Repetition Maximum Deadlift (MDL) event from the ACFT. The MDL tests lower body and grip strength using a hex bar (trap bar), which is safer and more accessible than a straight barbell for the general military population. Soldiers perform three repetitions at their heaviest manageable weight within a 5-minute window. The event simulates lifting heavy equipment, ammunition crates, and casualties — tasks fundamental to ground combat. Scoring ranges from 140 lbs (minimum for most age/sex groups at 60 points) to 340 lbs for a maximum score. The hex bar's neutral grip position reduces lower back stress compared to conventional deadlifts, making the event safer while still testing functional pulling strength.

Use current official event guidance when preparing for an assessed score.

Use the Army Deadlift Calculator FAQ guide

Check the calculator labels before entering a value.
Why does the ACFT use a hex bar instead of a straight bar?+

The hex bar positions the load closer to the body's center of gravity, reducing shear force on the lower back. This makes the lift safer for the general population while still effectively testing lower body and grip strength.

What weight is needed to max the deadlift?+

The maximum deadlift score (100 points) generally requires a 3-rep max of 340 lbs. The minimum passing weight (60 points) is approximately 140 lbs, varying slightly by age and gender.

How should I train for the MDL?+

Perform hex bar deadlifts 2-3 times per week using progressive overload. Supplement with squats, Romanian deadlifts, and farmer's carries. Focus on proper form before adding weight. A 12-week program can add 40-60 lbs to most soldiers' deadlift.

Can I use lifting straps for the MDL?+

No, the ACFT does not allow lifting straps, wraps, or gloves for the deadlift event. Chalk may be authorized by the test OIC. This means grip strength is a genuine factor in your MDL performance.
