What the Army Plank Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

The Army Plank Calculator scores the Plank event (PLK) from the ACFT, which replaced the legacy APFT sit-up as the core assessment event. The plank tests isometric core endurance — the ability to maintain a rigid torso position under sustained load, which is critical for load-bearing, rucking, and maintaining proper body mechanics during extended operations. The event is scored based on hold time, starting from a minimum of approximately 1:30 for a passing score to 3:40+ for maximum points, depending on age and gender. Unlike the sit-up, the plank does not involve spinal flexion, reducing injury risk while still effectively testing the deep core stabilizers (transverse abdominis, multifidus, and internal obliques) alongside the rectus abdominis.

Use current official event guidance when preparing for an assessed score.

Check the calculator labels before entering a value.
What is proper ACFT plank form?+

Forearms flat on the ground, elbows under shoulders, body in a straight line from head to heels. Feet can be together or up to shoulder-width apart. The body must remain rigid — sagging, piking, or excessive movement results in a warning or termination.

How long do I need to plank to pass?+

The minimum passing time (60 points) varies by age and gender but is generally around 1:30 for young soldiers. Maximum score requires approximately 3:40 or longer.

How can I improve my plank time quickly?+

Train planks 4-5 times per week with progressive overload. Start with sets at 60-70% of your max hold time, then gradually increase. Add variety with side planks, weighted planks, and plank shoulder taps to build comprehensive core stability.

Why did the Army switch from sit-ups to planks?+

Research showed that sit-ups can contribute to lower back injuries due to repeated spinal flexion, while planks build the isometric core stability more relevant to military tasks like rucking and load carriage without the injury risk.
