How Army Body Composition Calculator turns inputs into an estimate

Enter only the values requested by this tool and keep units consistent.

Start by entering your sex, age, height, and weight. The calculator first checks whether your weight is within the screening table limits. If you exceed the table weight, enter your circumference measurements (neck, waist, hip for women) to get your body fat percentage estimate.

What the Army Body Composition Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

The Army Body Composition Calculator combines the two-step screening process from AR 600-9 into one streamlined tool. Step one checks whether your weight falls within the acceptable range on the height-weight screening table. If you exceed the table weight, step two estimates your body fat percentage using the circumference-based tape test. This mirrors the actual process used by unit commanders and master fitness trainers during physical readiness assessments. The height-weight table provides maximum allowable weights by height for initial screening — for example, a 70-inch male should weigh no more than 190 lbs (ages 17-20). Understanding both steps helps soldiers prepare for the complete assessment rather than focusing on weight alone.

Use the current official procedure for any administrative determination.

What is the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP)?+

The ABCP is the Army's formal program for managing soldiers who exceed body fat standards. It includes dietary counseling, fitness plans, and 90-day progress reviews. Soldiers remain flagged until they meet standards or are separated.

Can I pass if I exceed the weight table?+

Yes. Exceeding the screening weight only triggers a tape test. Many physically fit soldiers exceed the weight table but pass the body fat assessment because they carry significant lean muscle mass.

Who administers the official body composition assessment?+

A trained unit representative, typically the master fitness trainer or a designated NCO, administers the assessment following AR 600-9 measurement procedures, taking each circumference measurement three times and using the average.

Does the assessment differ for Reserve soldiers?+

Reserve and National Guard soldiers are subject to the same AR 600-9 standards as Active Duty. However, assessment frequency may differ based on unit training schedules and mobilization status.
