What the Army Body Fat Percentage Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

This calculator focuses on translating your raw measurements into a body fat percentage and comparing it against the AR 600-9 standards table. The Army uses age-group brackets to determine maximum allowable body fat: males range from 20% (ages 17-20) to 26% (ages 40+), while females range from 30% to 36% across the same brackets. Unlike BMI, body fat percentage accounts for body composition differences — a muscular soldier may exceed the weight table yet pass the tape test comfortably. This tool helps you understand where you stand relative to your specific age-group limit and whether you would pass or fail an official assessment. It is especially useful for soldiers approaching the borderline of their allowable percentage, allowing them to monitor small changes in waist or neck circumference that can shift the result by several percentage points.

Use the current official procedure for any administrative determination.

Check the calculator labels before entering a value.
What are the Army body fat limits by age group?+

For males: 20% (17-20), 22% (21-27), 24% (28-39), 26% (40+). For females: 30% (17-20), 32% (21-27), 34% (28-39), 36% (40+). These limits are defined in AR 600-9 Table 3-1.

Does muscle mass affect the tape test result?+

Indirectly, yes. A larger neck circumference (common in muscular individuals) reduces the calculated body fat percentage in the DoD formula, which can benefit well-built soldiers who exceed the weight table.

How often should I check my body fat percentage?+

For personal tracking, monthly measurements taken under the same conditions provide the most useful trend data. Official assessments follow the unit schedule, typically semi-annually or as part of ABCP.

Why does the Army use percentage instead of just weight?+

Weight alone does not distinguish between lean mass and fat mass. Two soldiers at the same height and weight can have very different body compositions. Body fat percentage provides a more accurate assessment of physical readiness.
