What the Army Body Fat Calculator helps you understand
The Army Body Fat Calculator implements the Department of Defense circumference-based tape test method prescribed in AR 600-9. This method uses neck, waist, and (for women) hip measurements along with height to estimate body fat percentage through a logarithmic formula developed by Hodgdon and Beckett. The DoD formula was validated against hydrostatic weighing and has been the standard administrative method since 1981. Soldiers who exceed the screening weight table during a height-weight check are referred to this tape test as the next step in the Army Body Composition Program (ABCP). Results are rounded to the nearest whole percent, and the maximum allowable body fat varies by age group — for example, males aged 17-20 must remain at or below 20%, while females in the same range must stay at or below 30%. Understanding how the formula works helps soldiers prepare accurate, consistent measurements and track their progress between official assessments.
Use the current official procedure for any administrative determination.
