How Army Tape Test Calculator turns inputs into an estimate

Enter only the values requested by this tool and keep units consistent.

Follow the measurement protocol carefully: use a non-elastic tape pulled snug but not compressing tissue. Measure your neck at its narrowest point. Measure your waist at the navel (males) or narrowest point (females). Women add hips at the widest gluteal point. Take each measurement three times and enter the average.

What the Army Tape Test Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

The Army Tape Test Calculator is designed to help soldiers practice and understand the circumference measurement process used in official body fat assessments. The tape test follows a precise protocol: measurements are taken at specific anatomical landmarks using a spring-loaded or non-elastic tape. For males, the neck is measured at the narrowest point below the laryngeal prominence, and the abdomen at the navel level. For females, the neck, waist (narrowest point), and hip (widest point) are measured. Each site is measured three times, and the average is recorded to the nearest half inch. This calculator walks you through the correct protocol and applies the same formula used by official Army assessors, so you can verify your technique produces consistent results before your actual assessment.

Use the current official procedure for any administrative determination.

Use the Army Tape Test Calculator FAQ guide

Check the calculator labels before entering a value.
What type of tape measure should I use?+

Use a flexible, non-elastic tape measure. The Army recommends a Gulick spring-loaded tape for official measurements, which applies consistent tension. Avoid cloth or stretchy tapes as they introduce measurement error.

How many times should each site be measured?+

Each circumference site must be measured three times per AR 600-9 protocol. The three values are averaged and rounded to the nearest half inch. If any two measurements differ by more than one inch, the set is retaken.

Does hydration affect tape test results?+

Yes, hydration status can temporarily change circumference measurements. Dehydration may slightly reduce waist circumference, while overhydration can increase it. Measure under similar conditions each time.

What time of day gives the most accurate results?+

Morning measurements taken before eating tend to be most consistent. Abdominal bloating from meals can increase waist circumference by up to an inch. Official measurements should be taken before physical training.
