What the Army Ideal Weight Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

The Army Ideal Weight Calculator helps soldiers identify a target weight range that provides a comfortable margin within AR 600-9 standards. Rather than showing just the maximum, this tool calculates a recommended range accounting for both the Army maximum and general health guidelines. Maintaining weight 5-10 lbs below the maximum gives soldiers a buffer against natural daily fluctuations of 2-4 lbs. The tool also references the Hamwi formula for ideal body weight, providing an additional perspective based on height and sex.

Use the Army Ideal Weight Calculator FAQ guide

Check the calculator labels before entering a value.
What is the Hamwi formula?+

The Hamwi formula estimates ideal body weight as 106 lbs for the first 5 feet plus 6 lbs per additional inch for men, or 100 lbs plus 5 lbs per inch for women. It is a rough guideline, not a medical standard.

How much buffer should I maintain?+

A 5-10 lb buffer below the screening limit is practical. Daily weight can fluctuate 2-4 lbs from hydration, meals, and exercise, so a buffer prevents borderline situations during weigh-ins.

Is ideal weight the same as maximum allowed?+

No. The AR 600-9 maximum is the upper limit before a tape test is required — not a health target. Most professionals recommend maintaining weight well below the maximum for optimal physical readiness.

Should I aim for a specific BMI instead?+

BMI does not account for body composition. A muscular soldier may have a high BMI but low body fat. For Army purposes, the height-weight table and tape test are the official standards, not BMI.
