What the Military Tape Test Calculator helps you understand

Repeat measurements under similar conditions for a more useful trend.

This Military Tape Test Calculator is a practice and preparation tool for service members across all branches who face the circumference-based body fat assessment. The tape test protocol requires precise, repeatable measurements — even small inconsistencies in tape placement or tension can shift results by 1-2 percentage points. This tool emphasizes proper measurement technique alongside the calculation. Key tips include ensuring the tape is level and at the correct anatomical landmark, having the subject stand erect with arms at their sides, and measuring on bare skin. Common errors include placing the abdominal tape above or below the navel, measuring the neck at the wrong angle, or applying inconsistent tension.

Use the current official procedure for any administrative determination.

Check the calculator labels before entering a value.
Can I request a re-measurement?+

Yes, AR 600-9 allows soldiers to request a re-measurement by a different trained measurer if they believe the initial measurement was taken incorrectly. The commander makes the final determination.

Should I measure over clothing?+

Official measurements should be taken on bare skin or over a thin undershirt. Clothing adds thickness that can increase circumferences by up to half an inch, which could affect the result.

How tight should the tape be pulled?+

The tape should contact the skin all the way around without compressing tissue. A Gulick spring-loaded tape applies consistent tension automatically. With a standard tape, pull snug but not tight enough to indent.

What if my three measurements vary significantly?+

If any two of the three measurements at a single site differ by more than one inch, the entire set for that site should be retaken. Large variations indicate inconsistent tape placement or tension.
